We Can Help with Newborn Care

Having a newborn is a wonderful experience and a very busy time in your life. It’s only natural to have a few questions about newborn care. Our pediatrician has the answers. Dr. Art Quintanilla and Dr. Leon Mizrahi at Rancho Mirage Pediatrics in Rancho Mirage, CA, provide a wide range of pediatric medicine services, including newborn care.

What You Need To Know About Newborn Care

You want your newborn to thrive, and it all begins with newborn care. Proper newborn care can help your baby grow and develop into a healthy toddler. Your baby’s first newborn care visit will happen when your baby is just a few days old. During this newborn care visit, your pediatrician will:

  • Perform a comprehensive physical examination
  • Administer the first doses of vaccines to protect against contagious, serious illnesses and diseases
  • Measure your baby’s weight and length, check breathing, and record other vital information
  • Discuss newborn care with you, so you will know how to care for your newborn between pediatric visits

After this initial newborn care visit, your newborn should be seen by the pediatrician at 1,2,4,6,9,15, and 18 months. The last newborn visit should happen when your child is about 2 years old.

To care for your newborn, remember these helpful tips:

  • Feed your newborn every 2 to 3 hours if you are breastfeeding
  • If your newborn is on formula, your newborn should feed every 3 to 4 hours
  • Let your newborn sleep most of the day, or at least 16 hours in the first weeks
  • Place your newborn on his or her back to sleep, to allow your baby to breathe easily
  • Your newborn’s stool will be black at first, changing to dark green and then to yellow as your newborn gets older
  • Bathe your newborn with mild soap and lukewarm water
  • Thoroughly clean the folds of skin to remove bacteria
  • Don't bathe your baby too often to avoid drying out your baby’s skin
  • Try to sleep when your newborn sleeps, so you can be rested to care for your newborn
  • Go for walks outside with your newborn, to enjoy some fresh air and exercise
